About Us

An interdisciplinary research team at Academia Sinica analyzes SARS-CoV-2 whole-genome sequences using data from the Global Initiative on Sharing All Influenza Data (GISAID). Besides recording the rise and fall of past variants, this monitoring network tracks recently emerging variants, so users can follow how each variant spreads in individual countries (or worldwide) and how mutations occur in different viral genes, such as the S gene, which matters most for vaccines. Users can generate trend charts of specific mutation sites for a selected country (or worldwide) and watch time-lapse animations of how mutations change. The website will also publish reports and analyses of the latest viral variants from time to time.

The analyses used in this monitoring network have been published in the following papers: Analysis of genomic distributions of SARS-CoV-2 reveals a dominant strain type with strong allelic associations (Yang et al. PNAS 2020) and Subtyping of major SARS-CoV-2 variants reveals different transmission dynamics based on 10 million genomes (Yang et al. PNAS Nexus 2022). Analysis of more than 200,000 viral genome sequences showed that SARS-CoV-2 variants can be classified into six major types. Type VI began rising rapidly in many countries in February and March 2020, became dominant by April, and accounts for 99% of currently circulating viruses. Since August 2020, many emerging variants have appeared, most of them derived from Type VI. Analysis of genomic distributions of SARS-CoV-2 reveals a dominant strain type with strong allelic associations (Yang et al. PNAS 2020) 和 Subtyping of major SARS-CoV-2 variants reveals different transmission dynamics based on 10 million genomes (Yang et al. PNAS Nexus 2022)。
